We have successfully run courses and talks for Schools in order to educate infant, primary and secondary age school children about how to raise chicks and ducklings from incubation through to hatching and how to care for them and handle them whilst they are young.
The staff have all commented on how the atmosphere changed at the schools during this time and how the whole experience benefited not only the children, but the parents and teachers, by seeing how enthusiastic the children became about learning and how fulfilling the whole experience was for everyone. Many Schools that we have visited have requested that we go back every year and we have found that some of the pictures and letters of thanks written to us by the children have been very touching and very personally rewarding.
For our Hatching Talks and incubator hire package, we tailor make our talks to suit the age range of the children and during each talk, we engage with the children and encourage them to ask questions to support their learning. We give a short presentation, which can be followed by us talking the staff through how to set up and use an incubator, helping them set the eggs and leaving them with instructions on how to get the best out of a hatch. With our incubation package, we also supply a candling lamp and microscope in order that the children can see for themselves, the chicks developing from day one through to pipping and hatching stage. If required, we can also provide a brooder package, which consists of all is needed to brood the chicks.
All infertile eggs or eggs that die during incubation will be replaced, in order that the children can see live chicks at the end of the process. We can either collect the chicks after they have hatched, a week or so after they have been brooded, or the Schools can keep, or re-home them to any willing parents.
Below are some of the photographs, comments by children and testimonials from staff from Willesborough Infants School in Ashford.
"This wonderful experience was well received by all staff and children. The whole experience was a fabulous way to show and talk about living things in the world around us.
Having a hands on experience has allowed all children to have the experience of growth, life, love and affection.
Our school atmosphere showed a change over the 3 weeks that we had the eggs and then the chicks. The children seemed to have more enthusiasm for learning, the teachers were excited to see that the children wanted; to learn more about them and what we have to do to look after them, do writing about the life cycle of the egg to a chick and draw or paint pictures. Our Parents even got excited and wanted to see what their children were getting excited about. Our Governors were in school on the day that the chicks hatched and have explained that "it is such a wonderful, unique and fulfilling experience for us all".

"They are fluffy"
"They are making a noise...you have to be quiet...listen...if we are too loud we won't be able to hear them"
"I like having the chicks in school"
"Can they come back another day?"
Some of the comments made by parents of children after the experience;
"My child came home from school very excited and couldn't stop talking about the chicks. It is nice for them to capture these experiences and to share with us."
"My child found the whole experience very interesting and very exciting he always told us about what he had been doing when he came home from school. His favourite part was when they had hatched, he said there were very cute and very soft!"
"This was a fantastic experience. My child enjoyed coming home every day with updates on the eggs and how many days were left. Thank you so much for bringing something unique and interesting . My child loved it."
